Violence against women on rise in South Punjab (Pakistan).

Jan2013
MULTAN - Speakers at a seminar disclosed that over 1,600 incidents of violence against women took place in South Punjab during the last couple of year, indicating an alarming surge in violent acts against women in this region compared to rest of the country. The seminar was organized by Youth Front Pakistan in connection with its Gender Equity Programme here at Multan Press Club. The figures disclosed that 577 women became victims of acid burning, 444 wanni, 112 rape, 45 honour killing, 25 murder on dowry and 17 karo kari.
Speaking on the occasion, Coordinator of the project Nasreen Kazmi said that the known number of violence against women cases was just a tip of iceberg as majority of the cases were not reported by the victims or their families. She lamented that although women constituted 52 per cent of total population, they were deprived of basic rights like education and inheritance. She pointed out that the recent increase in violence against women took place because of poor or non-implementation of laws. She drew the attention of journalists towards different forms of violence against women, saying they were harassed at workplaces, denied identity cards, not allowed to cast vote and subjected to physical and mental torture at homes.
"Keeping in view the situation, the Youth Front has launched a project in five districts of Punjab including Multan, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh and Khanewal with the collaboration of USAID and Aurat Foundation to make women aware of their rights," she declared. She said that the women would be given awareness on violence, approach to private shelter homes and importance of their vote. She said that multiple activities like meetings with the partnership of press clubs, seminars, theatre programmes, radio shows and focus discussion groups would be organized.
President of Multan Press Club Rana Pervez Hameed, general secretary Khalid Chaudhry, Rakhshanda Nayyar and others also spoke on this occasion.
